Special Education Paraprofessional Substitute

General Summary:

The best candidates for substitute teacher jobs have a bachelor’s degree and enjoy working with students. They are flexible and have some sort of education experience. Formal experience is valuable, but we welcome those with informal experience also. For example, if you have experience as a tutor or coach, you could be a great asset to our school. We have a variety of opportunities for the right candidates, allowing them to prioritize certain subjects, grades and even classrooms.

As part of the application process, candidates will undergo an interview and background check. Training for new substitutes is offered each semester. Successful candidates who do not have a degree from an accredited 4-year college or university are paid $120.00 a day. Those with a 4-year degree are paid $150.00/day if they cover a full day or if they cover fewer than 4 periods/day rate will be prorated. Candidates will be notified via e-mail, phone or text message (your preference) when an assignment becomes available.

Special education paraprofessionals assist students with special needs under the direction of a certified teacher. Paraprofessionals generally work in an inclusionary setting but may also provide one-on-one support. A special education paraprofessional, under general supervision, provides assistance to a classroom teacher, performing a variety of tasks relating to the physical, emotional health and safety, and instructional needs of students in a classroom setting; assists in the implementation of instructional programs, including self-help and behavior management as well as instruction. Paraprofessionals affirm the students’ abilities and strive to promote dignity in all relationships. The special education paraprofessional performs related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications:

Required

  • High School Diploma
  • Passion to educate students with special needs

Duties and Responsibilities (Including but not limited to):

  • Carries to completion in a timely manner, instructional and supportive activities as assigned by the supervising teacher
  • Assisting students in achieving academic success
  • Working with students who may be aggressive or disruptive in class
  • Behavior support which may include physical management
  • Social integration
  • Consultation and collaboration with Special Education and Regular Education Teachers as well as related staff
  • IEP Clerk duties to support compliance

Skills Required:

  • Ability to perform several tasks concurrently under varying deadlines
  • Abilty to manage small group and individual behaviors using CHAMPs/DSC positive classroom supports
  • Abilty to maintain accurate progress monitoring records
  • Ability to instruct students in small groups or individually using intervention programs under the guidance the the special education teacher
  • Ability to exercise tact, good judgment, and initiative in dealing with students, faculty, and the public
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Google, etc.
  • Able to identify sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
