JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, provide insight to students on courses to take and the graduation requirements for their specific programs and post-secondary plans.  Coordinate orientations for new and transfer students.  Review placement and other standardized test scores, transcripts and course prerequisites to help determine grade level placement and whether a student is eligible to join certain programs or classes. Monitor and support struggling students using various methods including parent/teacher meetings, establishing tutor resources, check-ins, etc.

 

Essential Functions-

Oversee and participate in processing a variety of assessment tests to ensure proper student placement including communicating placement test results to parents; establish and maintain related timelines and priorities; 

Evaluate and determine how credits transfer between schools, maintaining accurate records of work. 

Serve as a liaison for the school; represent the school to prospective students and families; attend events such as school fairs to discuss academic opportunities with students and parents; attend parent meetings with formal presentation of academic opportunities to prospective students and parents.

Guide secondary students to graduation through meeting credit requirements as well as assessment requirements; provide insight into course path/plans based on the student’s interests; 

Monitor and support struggling students using various methods including parent/teacher meetings, establishing tutor resources, check-ins, etc;

Create and maintain graduation tracking documents for each student, verifying graduation progress each semester and update course plans as needed based on evaluations. 

Update/backfill student transcripts ensuring accuracy and appropriate credits toward graduation, evaluating progress toward graduation;

 Send grade retention and D&F letters at appropriate times during school year and update student schedules and 4 year academic plans based on final grade evaluation;

 Coordinate with college and/or college counselors to ensure appropriate post-secondary and/or career path for students is aligned with high school path;

 Work together with students to create and maintain 4 year academic plans discussing and reviewing programs and opportunities available to them such as AP and CE courses, CTE paths available, and PTECH program options.

 Maintain a schedule that allows students to drop in or make an appointment to discuss important academic topics keeping accurate records of all interactions with students and/or parents.

 Ensure timely communications to students regarding: important dates and deadlines, registration, school policies and procedures, course changes, etc.

 Participate in meetings, workshops, training and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.

 

 EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience

A bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience in academic advising is required or a combination of training and experience which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed herein. 

Knowledge

Must have a solid understanding of the JI culture and know the why of what we do.  Thorough understanding of graduation requirements and all programs available to students.  Knowledge of courses offered and course descriptions including prerequisites for courses.
